How does it work?

It loads Erlang’s binary .beam file format, converts it into Java’s .class file format, and loads it into the JVM. It will eventually have it’s own implementation of all Erlang’s BIFs (built-in-functions) written in Java.

如今的web服务器需要同时处理一万个以上的客户端了，难道不是吗？毕竟如今的网络是个big place了。

现在的计算机也很强大了，你只需要花大概$1200就可以买一个1000MHz的处理器，2G的内存， 1000Mbit/sec的网卡的机器。让我们来看看--20000个客户，每个为50KHz，100Kbyes和 50Kbit/sec，那么没有什么比为这两万个客户端的每个每秒从硬盘读取4千字节然后发送到网络上去更消耗资源的了。可以看出硬件不再是瓶颈了。 (That works out to $0.08 per client, by the way. Those $100/client licensing fees some operating systems charge are starting to look a little heavy!)

在1999年最繁忙的ftp站点，cdrom.com，尽管有G比特的网络带宽，却也只能同时处理10000个客户端。在2001年，同样的速度可以被几个ISP服务商所提供，他们预期该趋势会因为大量的商业用户而变得越来越普遍。

目前的瘦客户端模型也开始又变得流行起来了--服务器运行在Internet上，为数千个客户端服务。

基于以上一些考虑，这里就配置操作系统或者编写支持数千个网络客户端的代码问题提出一些注意点，该论题是基于类Unix操作系统的--该系统是我的个人爱好，当然Windows也有占有一席之地。

单播（Unicast）指网络中从源向目的地转发单播流量的过程。单播流量地址唯一。单播方式下，只有一个发送方和一个接收方。与之比较，组播是指单个发送方对应一组选定接收方的一种通信，任意播是指任意发送方对应一组较为接近的接收方间的一种通信。早期的点对点通信含义类似于单播。

单播传输是 LANs 传输中的主要使用方式。所有 LANs（如以太网）和 IP 网络都支持单播传输模式，并且大多数用户都了解标准单播应用程序，如：http、smtp、ftp 和 telnet ― 都作为 TCP 传输协议。新版本的网际协议第六版（IPv6）支持单播同时也支持任意播和组播类型。许多路由选择协议如路由选择信息协议（RIP）和开放最短路径优先（OSPF），都支持高效 Internet 单播路由选择过程。

IPv6 支持单播（Unicast）、组播（Multicast）和任意播（Anycast）三种类型。IPv6 中没有关于广播（Broadcast）的具体划分，而是作为组播的一个典型类型。

以Ethernet网络架构而言，封包（Packet）在同一个subnet中传递时，以收方地址来判别该由那台主机接收；若在不同的subnet时，就要透过路由器（Router）根据收方地址，把这个packet送往收方主机所在的另一个subnet上。这就是Internet上最普遍、一对一方式传送的unicast。

另一类传输模式为一对多模式，分为broadcast和multicast 二种。当broadcast时，同一subnet上所有主机都会收到broadcastpacket。但是broadcast packet会被subnet router挡下来，不会传送到另一个subnet，否则网络就会被broadcast packet瘫痪了。

multicast是一对一个群组（group）的传输模式，不同于broadcast的是，同一subnet中只有参加multicast group的主机才会收到封包，其它的主机就不会受到无谓的干扰，而且multicastpacket会透会mrouter（multicast router）的运作将封包送到另一个subnet的multicast group。另一方面，multicast和broadcast相同的特性是，不管接收封包的主机有几台，都只有一个数据流，也就是说，同一个subnet里，不管接收主机的数量，所需的频宽都是一样的。
